A guided first smart-home setup

See key home conditions at a glance.

Choose your own mix of temperature-and-humidity, open/close, and water-leak sensors. We show you what to buy, how to connect it, how to prove it works, and how to undo it—without locking your home into one company.

Your sensors. No preset bundle you do not want.

Your hardware. The hub and devices stay yours.

Test before trust. Every path keeps an undo plan.

The simple explanation

Home Assistant is the brain you keep at home.

Home Assistant is free, open-source software that lets compatible smart-home devices work together. Home Assistant Green is a small, ready-to-use computer that runs that software inside your home.

  1. Green

Runs Home Assistant in your home.

  2. Your radio

Connects Zigbee or Z-Wave sensors to Green.

  3. Your sensors

Report room readings, openings, or wet/dry state.

  4. Your screen

Shows the state and optional messages you choose.

What “local” really means

The sensor connection, core data, and Home Assistant logic run on Green in your home. Phone delivery and access while away may still use internet services.

Home Assistant Cloud is optional

Standard phone notifications do not require the paid Cloud plan. The optional plan is the easiest supported route for secure remote access; Home Assistant itself has no required subscription.

Two honest ways to begin

Choose a guided start—or tell us what you need.

Starter is the fixed, self-guided path. Custom begins with an email and a written quote—never a mystery checkout.

Something different in mind?

Open Home Custom

Cameras, presence, air quality, energy, lighting, irrigation—or a Home Assistant idea that does not fit Starter. Tell us what you want to accomplish.

Bring us the idea. We confirm fit, scope, and price by email before you pay anything.

Custom quotescope and pricing are confirmed by email before any work or payment

The result: A written fit decision and, when appropriate, a clear custom quote that identifies the deliverables, assumptions, one-time price, support window, and what is not included.

Help with clear edges

You should know who does what.

Starter includes up to three setup-specific replies by email for the complete setup, including help with up to three simple notification automations—not three replies per sensor or automation. We aim to reply within two business days. No call, screen share, remote access, or open-ended custom work is included.

What we help with

  • Following the included numbered steps
  • Checking names and the supported sensor path
  • Running the included verification checks
  • Creating and testing up to three supplied notification patterns
  • Finding the pause, reset, or undo instructions

What remains yours

  • Buying and physically installing every device
  • Your network, phone, accounts, and passwords
  • Any electrical, wiring, monitoring, or repair work
  • Deciding whether a Custom quote fits your needs

14-day refund: The full amount paid to Open Home Kits, including tax collected by Open Home Kits, is refundable for 14 days after successful paid order confirmation. Hardware and other third-party charges are excluded.

Convenience, not monitoring: Sensor state and optional notifications do not guarantee detection, prevent damage, or replace security, safety, health, or emergency systems.

Beyond Starter

Cameras? Presence? Energy? A stranger idea?

Open Home Custom is the email-first path for a Home Assistant idea that does not fit the Starter shortlist. We check compatibility and scope, then quote it in writing before you pay anything.

Common questions

Before you build your mix.

Do I need a different guide for every combination?

No. Complete only the modules matching your chosen categories, then repeat the pair-name-place-test cycle once per selected sensor.

Does Open Home Kits sell the hardware?

No. You buy Green, either ZBT-2 for Zigbee or ZWA-2 for Z-Wave, and matching sensors from their sellers. The links use no affiliate tracking.

What if I want a different sensor or automation?

Starter includes up to three simple notification-only automations using its sensors. Use Open Home Custom for other sensor categories, equipment control, or a different automation job.

Is a water-leak sensor a monitoring service?

No. Starter helps you pair, view, and test wet/dry state and an optional convenience notification. It does not guarantee detection or property protection.
